Small Chops (Puff Puff)

Published on 1 April 2026 at 17:44

If you’ve ever been around Nigerian parties, street corners, or family gatherings, you’ve probably come across the irresistible aroma of freshly fried puff puff. It’s one of those snacks that instantly feels like home...

If theres no puff puff inside that small chops platter is that even a gbedu?

So, what exactly is puff puff?

Puff puff is a deep fried dough snack made from simple ingredients like flour, sugar, yeast, water, and a pinch of salt.

But don’t let the simplicity fool you, when done right, it’s soft, airy on the inside, slightly crisp on the outside, and lightly sweet.

Why it’s so special

Puff puff isn’t just food, it’s a vibe. You’ll find it:

  • At birthdays and weddings

  • Sold by street vendors in the evenings

  • Shared among friends and family

  • Served alongside other small chops at parties

It’s one of Nigeria’s most loved comfort snacks, similar to doughnuts but lighter and more “pillowy.”

Think of a soft, fluffy bite with a hint of sweetness. Some people like it plain, while others dust it with sugar or pair it with spicy pepper sauce for that sweet and spicy combo Nigerians love.

How it’s made (quick overview) My recipe

  1. Mix flour, sugar, yeast, salt, and warm water into a smooth batter

  2. Let it rise until it doubles in size

  3. Scoop small portions into hot oil

  4. Fry until golden brown

  5. Enjoy warm (this is the best part!)

To get a more richer flavor you can add vanilla extract and milk.

Fun twist

Across West Africa, puff puff has cousins:

  • In Ghana, it’s also called “bofrot”

  • In some places, it’s spiced with nutmeg or flavored with vanilla

  • In South Africa it is called Amagwinya.

Why people keep coming back to it

Because it’s simple, affordable, and deeply nostalgic, I remember the good old days of having a guy hawk some in a square showglass, and to get your attention, he'd use an iron to hit the glass, multiple times, choi....

One bite can take you back to those days.....

hmmmm
